Cory Franklin, MD, spent twenty-five years as the director of intensive care at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He is an editorial board contributor to the Chicago Tribune and the author of Chicago Flashbulbs. His work has been published in several publications, including the New York Times.

interesting look at medicine

Not only is this book full of amusing stories about patients and the odd environment doctors work in, it ends with an important reflection on the direction medicine has taken. As a person with metastatic cancer, I'm all too familiar with one side of the equation, and in just the few years I've been sick, I've seen corporate, bureaucratic forces become ever more prominent. It has changed before my eyes and not for the better.
Dr Franklin had his career when medicine was as good as it was going to get as far as the autonomy of doctors and it's a sad thing to know my oncologist can't order a simple test that I've had dozens of times, without a mountain of paperwork and pleading against denials. He is no longer the decision maker in my healthcare, he is the paper pusher, getting the right forms to the right department. Today's healthcare will ensure my death, Dr. Franklin would have been allowed to save me.
Aside from that, if you are curious to know what it is like to have been a doctor in Chicago and hear stories about some of the patients Dr Franklin remembers today, get this book.

Wit and wisdom from the ER and ICU

As a nurse, I am always interested in books written by medical professionals. Its interesting reading to find out how 'the other guy/gal' finds his or her chosen career path. Cook County ICU was a great read for me. Dr. Franklin not only gave some insightful glimpses into his 30 yr career as an ER/ICU physician, but what I found most interesting, also gave a well stated view on the current state of healthcare. Although I live in Canada, so dont have the same medical insurance/for profit issues as hospitals in the USA have, I found Dr. Franklin's viewpoint to be very on point. Especially how medicine in the hospital has become so depersonalized, something I have seen in my 26 year career. Very enlightening comments regarding electronic health records, confidentiality and other hospital issues. A really interesting read for medical and non-medical personnel alike.

Having gone to Cook County Hospital once in the late 60's I was eager to hear the stories Mr. Franklin told so well. I highly recommend this book as a well written, informative and entertaining read.
